How to use it

- Reading time assumes 200 words per minute silently and 130 aloud, which are the usual averages for adult readers.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a word defined?
- Any run of non-whitespace characters. That matches how word processors count, so "e-mail" is one word and "don't" is one word.
- Why does my word count differ from Word?
- Different tools disagree on hyphens, numbers and symbols. Differences of a percent or two are normal and rarely matter for a limit.
- Is there a length limit?
- Only what your browser can hold. Documents of several megabytes count without trouble.
- Does my text leave the page?
- No. Counting is done in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
